Maps and Directions

The Institute of Nuclear Physics is located on the campus of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU Mainz) and can be easily reached by any means of transportation.

Plane

There are two airports from where you can comfortably and quickly travel to Mainz:

Airport Frankfurt/Main

  • Train (EC, ICE, IC, RE, RB) or S-Bahn (line S8) transit from Frankfurt/Main to Mainz main station
  • Duration: 30-40 minutes
  • Ticket price: 4-8 € (depending on the train)

Airport Frankfurt-Hahn (Hunsrück)

  • Bus transfer to Mainz main station: ORN from terminal 3 (leaves Frankfurt-Hahn every 3 hours)
  • Duration: 90 minutes

Car route from Frankfurt-Hahn to Mainz:
Take highway B 50 to get to Autobahn A 61, on-ramp "Rheinböllen" direction "Ludwighafen". At "Dreieck Nahetal" change to Autobahn A 60, direction Mainz. Leave Autobahn A 60 at exit "Saarstraße".

Train

Take a train to the main train station Mainz Hauptbahnhof. Schedule information is provided by the Deutsche Bahn.

Public Transportation

Trams and buses generally leave every 5 minutes from Mainz Hauptbahnhof. The easiest way to get to the Institute of Nuclear Physics is to take a bus or tram from the west exit of the main train station and get off at the second stop Friedrich-von-Pfeiffer-Weg. Take one of the following:

  • Trams 51, 53, 59 towards Finthen, Lerchenberg
  • Buses 54, 55, 56, 75 towards Finthen, Wackernheim

For your ride from Mainz Hauptbahnhof to the University you should buy a Kurzstrecken-Ticket which is valid within three bus stops. This short-distance ticket is cheaper than a normal bus ticket. You can buy it directly from the bus driver or use an automatic ticket machine. Information on public transport within and around Mainz is provided by RMV.

Parking 

Parking on campus is available for guests up to 30 hours a year. Your license plate will automatically be scanned upon entry and exit. Please see the attached site plan for parking near the campus. Parking is also available at the nearby Bruchweg stadium (200 meters from the University’s main entrance).
